Yateley Town Council is continuing its programme of pond management works to improve biodiversity across its sites. A recent site visit by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Amphibian Group found that Yateley Green Pond currently has very little aquatic life and no evidence of amphibians this year. This is a concern, as ponds like this should provide an important habitat for a range of wildlife.
The presence of carp, introduced unlawfully to the pond in 2018, has significantly affected its ecological balance. As a shallow body of water, the pond is not well suited to supporting carp, particularly as oxygen levels can drop during warmer periods. This, in turn, limits the pond’s ability to support other native species.
There have also been a number of incidents involving birds becoming entangled in discarded fishing line or injured by hooks. The Council has received reports from concerned residents, and Council staff and local wildlife rescue organisations, have attended and attempted to assist affected birds, although sadly not all could be saved.
After careful consideration, the Council has decided to manage Yateley Green Pond as a dedicated wildlife pond to support biodiversity. As part of this approach, fishing will no longer be permitted. Further habitat improvement works are planned for the autumn. We recognise the importance of angling in the community and are exploring opportunities to support fishing in more appropriate locations.
