The COVID snake was created during the first Covid-19 lockdown when local people started placing painted stones in a line to form a ‘snake’ in a wooded area on Yateley Common. It became a popular place to walk to when restrictions were in place and represented the community spirit that was felt at the time.
It grew and grew to around two thousand stones!
Yateley Town Council were asked by the community to find a way to preserve the snake as a permanent reminder of that time.
In early 2023 the stones were collected from Yateley Common. One of our fantastic local scout groups cleaned all the stones and they, along with Vision 4 Youth, started re-painting them as unfortunately many had very little paint left.
We are pleased to share that, in November 2024, the Covid Snake was been moved to its permanent location at Heathlands Cemetery. All the usable stones that were collected have been included in this installation, ensuring it remains a meaningful tribute to our community spirit.
